creative voice, personal expression and showcasing work
Unfortunately, scheduling elective courses is more challenging than ever. Particularly in the Visual Arts, and in small schools.
In an effort to offer more options for students, I taught mixed level courses. To manage materials and maintain clear goals, I taught all my classes thematically. Teaching the same concepts, using the same media, but different Anchor Works and different expected outcomes that were tiered by student choice and current level.
Fortunately, the National Art Standards and the California Art Standards are very helpful in that regard. The Standards are spiraling; Same concept different expectations around that concept as a student progresses in age and ability.
