Graphic Design 

scope and sequence - 
based on a traditional 2D design college level design course. Modified for digital media. 


 Fall Semester : 

Key assignments: Walking the Line. Expanded Shapes. Color Theory and Radial Symmetry. Tessellations and Textile Design

Unit 1: Line Characteristics  -  Anchor Works: Aboriginal Art, Hundertwasser,  Keith Haring. 

Unit 2: Shape- Positive/Negative Space  - Anchor Works: . Notan - Positive Negative space, Japanese Design Motifs, Op Art, 

Unit 3: Color Theory  - Anchor Works: Josef Albers, Psychology of Color, Simultaneous Color, Mandalas

Unit 4: TessellationsAnchor Works: MC Escher, Macintosh,  Textile Designs, WordPlay, Typographical Posters, 

 

Spring Semester: 

Key assignments: Creative Type: Typographical Illustration. Personal Logo. Event Poster. Social Issue Poster. Self Portrait. Magazine Layout, Motion Graphics and a Digital Personal Portfolio.

Unit 5: Type 1 Letter Forms  - Anchor Resources:  History of Typography, Wim Crouwel, Jonathan Hoefler, Helvetica: The Movie, Outcome: Working knowledge of History of Type, Letter Forms, Categories, Methods to effectively combine fonts for emphasis. Outcome: Create Emphasis with Typography and type features. 

Unit 6:  - Type 2  Logos - Anchor Resources:  Paula Scher, Saul Bass, Milton Glaser.  Outcome; Personal Logo

Unit 7:  Posters Convey Meaning: Anchor Works: Editorial and Typographical Illustrations. Considerations: Layout, Composition, Illustration and Typography.  Collaged Social Issue Posters.  Outcome:  Poster to convey a pertinent message. 

Unit 8: Curating Presentations - Anchor work:  Magazines, Blogs, Animations - etc. Methods to showcase a personal portfolio. Outcome: Personal Portfolio and end of year Presentation and/or Showcase.
